For Designer Jeans, Preshrunk Prices
Posted on October 31st, 2009 No commentsTHE $300 pair of designer jeans is now, courtesy of the recession, the $200 pair of designer jeans.tiffany jewelry
“It was all just a fad,” said Jeff Rudes, a founder of the hot-denim-label-du-jour J Brand Jeans and an astute observer of the suspiciously inflated prices of fashion’s most eternally reinvented staple. Like any commodity that becomes overpriced, there eventually comes a market correction. And denim’s day of reckoning was long overdue.“The floors at most of the major stores were so overassorted that they almost looked like Loehmann’s,” Mr. Rudes said. “They were just cramming jeans onto the racks.”The introduction of $300 jeans – perhaps even more than $1,000 coin purses and $500 plastic sunglasses – marked the moment when customers really began to question the prices they were seeing in department stores.
Cotton dungarees for the price of an iPod was a stretch so extreme that retailers had to come up with a whole new term to suggest that the new jeans were different from the $100 jeans they used to sell in the 1990s. So, early in the decade designer jeans became “premium” jeans – as in, you had to pay a premium to wear them: $340 for Acne jeans, $350 for Ksubi jeans, $359 for True Religion jeans, $395 for Notify jeans, $580 for Dior jeans and so on. Before the recession, premium denim was one of the fastest growing categories of the apparel business, and there seemed to be no limit to what customers would pay for the latest label, fit, finish, wash or whatever Paris Hilton wore.Tiffany Necklace
But the denim bubble has burst, and only a handful of such extravagantly priced jeans remain at the jeans bar – labels like PRPS and 45rpm, which, in tacit acknowledgment of the decline of the premium business, are now more often referred to as “artisanal” jeans. Meanwhile, the sweet spot for designer jeans has relocated to a neighborhood just below $200, even though the styles do not look substantially different from the $300 jeans that were on the sales floors of Barneys New York and Bloomingdale’s only two years ago. “The key price is under $200 now,” said Eric Jennings, the men’s fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue. “The superexpensive stuff is not performing as well.”Despite all this tumult, designer denim is still one of the few bright spots of the apparel industry. Annual sales of all women’s jeans were actually up 5 percent over last year to $8.2 billion through August, though average prices were down 1 percent, according to the research firm NPD – the pricing shift is reflective of a broader reset taking place in luxury stores.
During the modern gilded age, the spiraling prices of designer clothes had more to do with driving profits than the actual design or construction of a garment. Designers found they could charge a lot for the perception of prestige. Dresses and suits and handbags were priced like cars, and consumers didn’t blink. But with jeans, it just felt more obvious that some kind of game was being played; the basic elements, after all, had not changed substantially in decades: five pockets, cotton, some rivets. Now designers are facing pressure from stores and from their competitors to rethink prices, in many cases resulting in less expensive jeans or more styles at the lower end of each designer’s range.
It has not gone unnoticed by executives behind the great denim rush of 2005 that even mainstream retailers like Gap and J. Crew have caught on to the appeal of Japanese denim, whisker treatments and fading details, and that they are now produce comparable premium-look jeans that cost around $60. Banana Republic has a new denim line coming in January. “Charging $600 for jeans for no reason at all – those days are over,” said You Nguyen, the senior vice president of women’s merchandising and design for Levi Strauss Company.Diesel, the Italian jeans company that pioneered the three-figure category, used to produce only two styles at its lowest price of $150 for men, $160 for women. This season there are 10, said Renzo Rosso, the label’s founder, “because the market demanded more product at this level.” Rock Republic, another popular label, introduced a Recession Collection this spring with styles under $140, about $40 less than before.
Ksubi, the maker of $280 skintight jeans, is now producing less expensive styles for stores in the United Kingdom and Australia. And Citizens of Humanity found it could entice retailers with a new style for $148, about 10 percent lower than its previous entry point.“Below that, it is no longer premium,” said Gary Freedman, the company’s chief operating officer. Theater Review – ‘The Emperor Jones’ – John Doug
Posted on October 28th, 2009 No commentsThe fallen emperor has been returned to glory.
John Douglas Thompson plays the title role in Eugene ONeill’s
The Emperor Jones, at the Irish Repertory Theater. It’s not that things turn out any happier for the ill-fated title character of Eugene O’Neill’s “Emperor Jones,” as the last hours of his life are played out at the Irish Repertory Theater, where Ciaran O’Reilly’s inspired revival opened Sunday night, starring a wondrous John Douglas Thompson. Once again Brutus Jones, the African-American island despot, is cruelly and systematically stripped of his majesty, his dignity and all the finer traits that separate man from beast. But in the play that bears his name, an ember of real magnificence has been uncovered and fanned, gently and artfully, into a blazing flame.
Set in a fluid, shadowy dreamscape, through which Mr. Thompson moves like a thrashing sleeper in a nightmare, this “Emperor” digs into recesses of the every-mind, setting off Jungian echoes of universal resonance in a work often perceived as a dated portrait of the black man’s burden. While much of Mr. O’Reilly’s production occurs in near-darkness, I can’t think of another show (in what has been a mostly lusterless theater season) that burns brighter. This act of illumination is a pinnacle in the rethinking of O’Neill’s short, brutal play, which spent decades moldering in that corner cupboard reserved for embarrassing works by great writers.
Though it electrified New Yorkers (including Alexander Woollcott of The New York Times) when it opened in 1920, “The Emperor Jones” came to seem shocking for all the wrong reasons in later years. Here, after all, was a portrait of an African-American man who, briefly endowed with power, was forced to crawl backward through the phases of civilization, talking all the while in the thick “sho’ nuff” dialect of minstrel shows. When the avant-garde Wooster Group performed the piece in the 1990s, a white actress (the superb Kate Valk) played Jones in blackface. And the production became a stinging depiction of black culture perceived through a white world’s distorting, contemptuous and uneasy gaze. I thought that the Wooster Group’s fiercely articulate interpretation might be the last word on “The Emperor Jones.”
Then I saw Thea Sharrock’s fine, confrontational production at the Gate Theater in London in 2005. (It later transferred to the National.) Set in a sand-floored box that suggested a safari hunter’s pit for big game, this “Emperor Jones” (starring Paterson Joseph) was played with great anger and no irony. It exuded the painful desperation of a man ensnared like a hounded animal, twisting in a trap forged by years of repressive history. Ms. Sharrock’s version invested “The Emperor Jones” with a visceral immediacy that suggested the upsetting impact it must have had in the 1920s. Mr. O’Reilly’s interpretation retains that charge of power, but also elicits the poetry and haunting musicality in O’Neill’s text.
Making exquisite use of dreamlike masks and puppets (by Bob Flanagan) and an aural backdrop (by Ryan Rumery and Christian Frederickson) that seems to originate in your own head, this “Emperor Jones” is quieter and stealthier than any I’ve seen. Its eerily lowered voice makes the case for the play as a study in the black hole of unconsciousness (a subject just entering the mainstream conversation in the era when it was written, and one that fascinated O’Neill).
A shivery whisper runs through this production as Jones, a former railroad porter and convict, descends into primal fear: It says that the wall between human reason and animal instinct is far frailer than we like to pretend. This tin-pot emperor, forced to retreat into the jungle when his subjects rise up against him, is no sociological specimen. He becomes what we’re all scared of turning into, when adrenaline floods us in moments of raw anger or terror. That’s partly because Mr. Thompson makes it impossible not to identify with Jones. An impressive Othello last season (both for Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, tiffany earring, Mass., and Theater for a New Audience in New York), this brawny actor has a naturally commanding physical presence, with a rich baritone voice to match.
But these assets are only a small part of what makes his Jones so compelling. This Emperor is from the beginning a figure of subtly mixed, potentially explosive elements, kept in tenuous balance. Like any successful ruler, of a business or a country, he’s smart enough to know that power is largely a matter of show. “Ain’t a man’s talkin’ big what makes him big – long as he makes folks believe it?” Jones asks Smithers (the excellent Rick Foucheux), his Cockney henchman, in the opening scene. -
Repent or Resign, Bishops Tell African Politicians
Posted on October 28th, 2009 No commentsROME – Declaring that Africa needed more “saints” in public life,Tiffany Earring, African bishops issued a strong statement on Friday calling on corrupt Catholic politicians on that continent to “repent” or leave office. They did not name names, but two of Africa’s most prominent Catholic leaders are President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, whose repressive policies and ruling elite are seen to have led his country to economic ruin, and President José Eduardo dos Santos of Angola, whose government is perceived as one of the most corrupt in the world. “Many Catholics in high office have fallen woefully short in their performance in office,” the bishops wrote in an unusually direct document wrapping up a month-long synod, or meeting, at the Vatican on the issues facing the church in Africa. “The synod calls on such people to repent, or quit the public arena and stop causing havoc to the people and giving the Catholic Church a bad name.”With its large Catholic population, estimated at 158 million, Africa in many ways represents the future of the Catholic Church.
It is expected that by 2025, one-sixth of the world’s Catholics, or about 230 million, will be African, and Africa produces a large percentage of the world’s priests. Pope Benedict XVI, who visited Cameroon and Angola in March, has often spoken out against the poverty, disease, corruption and violence that threaten African countries, and has said he sees the church as a force for democracy and social justice.
In their document on Friday, the bishops singled out crises in northern Uganda, South Sudan and Darfur and said that “those who control the affairs of those nations must take full responsibility for their woeful performance.”They added: “Whatever may be the responsibility of foreign interests, there is always the shameful and tragic collusion of the local leaders: politicians who betray and sell out their nations, dirty businesspeople who collude with rapacious multinationals, African arms dealers and traffickers who thrive on small arms that cause great havoc on human lives.”Echoing a theme in Benedict’s latest encyclical, “Caritas in Veritate,” about morality and global economics, albeit in more provocative language, the approximately 300 bishops who attended the meeting also called on multinational corporations to stop their “criminal devastation of the environment in their greedy exploitation of natural resources.”Calling women “the backbone” of the church in Africa, the bishops urged them “to be fully involved” in women’s programs, but said they should “make sure that the good ideas are not hijacked by the peddlers of foreign and morally poisonous ideologies about gender and human sexuality.”
The bishops did not veer from Vatican policy opposing the use of condoms to prevent the spread of H.I.V. and AIDS. “The problem cannot be overcome by the distribution of prophylactics,” they wrote. Instead, they urged abstinence among the unmarried and fidelity among the married. “Such a course of action not only offers the best protection against the spread of this disease but is also in harmony with Christian morality,” they wrote. -
Turnout Size Could Affect Bloomberg-Thompson Mayor
Posted on October 28th, 2009 No commentsHis administration’s record aside, and his campaign’s unmatched spending notwithstanding, mens Tiffany Jewelry, Michael R. Bloomberg’s aides in the field mince no words about exactly what will determine the outcome of next Tuesday’s mayoral election.

“At the end of the day, every election is about one thing: making sure your supporters get to the polls and vote,” Lenny Speiller, the campaign’s get-out-the-vote director, declares on the Bloomberg Web site.Recalling the record-low turnouts in last month’s primary and runoff, Mr. Speiller exhorts Bloomberg volunteers to shift into overdrive. “Our efforts have been and will continue to be the most expansive and effective grass-roots operation this city has ever seen,” he said in a blog post dated Friday. “Tonight we will knock on our 1,500,000th door, make our 550,000th volunteer phone call and hand out literature at our 4,000th transit stop and high traffic location – and if you think that’s impressive, you haven’t seen anything yet!”
With the mayor leading in public opinion polls by 16 percentage points or more, most New Yorkers might think he has nothing to worry about. But elections have been lost – most notably David N. Dinkins’s 1993 re-election race – because people who insisted to pollsters that they supported a candidate ultimately did not bother to vote. And a number of political analysts say that a predicted record-low turnout next Tuesday may jeopardize Mr. Bloomberg’s projected double-digit victory margin and even deliver him a third term with the lowest total vote received by a New York City mayor in nearly a century.
Those analysts discount the projections of a large margin of victory because, they argue, the most motivated voters are likely to be those who are angry with the mayor and inclined to vote against him, largely because of his reversal last year over term limits. Still, few, if any, independent analysts are going so far as to predict that Mr. Bloomberg will lose, given his sophisticated and amply financed get-out-the-vote operation, abetted by the support of major unions. “There’s no doubt that the term limit issue will be driving a lot of voters to the polls,” said Lee M. Miringoff, director of the Howard Wolfson, the mayor’s campaign media strategist, countered: “We don’t see any enthusiasm gap between the percentage we have of strong supporters and the percentage he has of strong supporters.
I think, frankly, while anger is a motivation for some, there are others who are strongly motivated because the city is moving in the right direction.”In a city where enrolled Democrats outnumber Republicans by nearly 6 to 1, the Thompson campaign is counting on party loyalists, the candidate’s support from black and Hispanic voters and vote-pulling complemented by operations run by union supporters and the Working Families Party. The Bloomberg campaign, armed with a sophisticated database, has enlisted 9,000 volunteers “making phone calls, knocking on doors in traditional old-fashioned campaigning,” as Maura Keaney, the field director, put it. “No money or technology really changes that.”

Book Review – ‘The Book of Genesis,’ Illustrated
Posted on October 27th, 2009 No commentsIt is not in praise of the Creator that R. Crumb portrays him in the splash page that begins his much-anticipated adaptation of Genesis in comic-book form as Crumb sees his own father. He grew up in helpless terror of Charles Crumb Sr., a former Marine Corps master sergeant who lorded over his family with icy severity. Early in his progress on “The Book of Genesis,” Crumb was asked by Robert Hughes of Time magazine if he was drawing God to look like Mr. Natural (the burlesque cartoon shaman whom he has long employed to poke fun at pop spirituality). Crumb replied: “He has a white beard, but he actually ended up looking more like my father. He has a very masculine face.” Both paternity and masculinity are matters of dubious value to Crumb, a wonderfully unlikely candidate to breathe new life into the founding narrative of masculine privilege and paternal authority in the Judeo-Christian world.
Crumb’s God appears, alongside the opening words of Genesis, spinning substance from a void that resembles a cosmic basketball in his enormous, hairy, veiny hands. He is a profoundly — almost grotesquely human-looking deity, very much the sort of being in whose image vulgar humankind could realistically come forth. His nose has the elongation of age (and an implied proto-Jewishness), and it is dotted with deep pores. His brow is furrowed in a permanent scowl, unchanged throughout the book. (In one of the chapters about Noah, Crumb has God scowling even as he pets a goat.) He wears a long white robe and, over it, a longer white robe of billowing, gentle tresses that flow from his scalp and his face to what would presumably be his feet. However much Crumb may think of his God as a retired ex-Marine, this man-God, in his haggard grandeur, brings to mind the work of two other artists relevant both to Genesis and to Crumb: the self-portrait sketches of Leonardo, who also depicted the Creation; and the early illustrations of St. Nicholas, the God-man of the modern era, as he was conceived by the 19th-century cartoonist Thomas Nast, whose hatch-work drawing style and piercing insolence have been major influences on Crumb.
Working almost exclusively on this mammoth project for five years, Crumb has rendered the entirety of Genesis in comics panels. “The first book of the Bible graphically depicted! Nothing left out!” brags a banner on the cover. This is scarcely the first time the Bible has been adapted to comics pages, of course. In the first decade of the comic-book business, the man who claimed to have invented the medium, M. C. Gaines, founded a whole company on a line of “Picture Stories From the Bible.” (When he died suddenly, his young son, William M. Gaines, inherited the company, and in a 20th-century case study in the enduring vagaries of primogeniture, the son discontinued the Bible strips and started publishing lurid, spicy crime and horror comics.)
The Catholic Church, which once opposed comics vigorously and, for a time in the 1940s, sponsored public burnings of comics at parochial schools, recognized the form’s appeal to young people and took to publishing its own comics adapted mostly from the New Testament. For the most part, the idea of Bible comics was to simplify and clean up the text for children, reducing the cryptic, sometimes dark poetry of the Scripture to juvenilia. Crumb’s is a Genesis for adults indeed, for adults only, as one might and should expect from an artist whose importance is rooted in his ability to give vivid form to taboos of the imagination with unapologetic bluntness and extravagant explicitness.
The prospect of Crumb’s doing the Bible might seem at first a stunt, an all-too-obvious mash-up of the most sacred and the most profane. When I heard about it, I thought immediately of Norman Mailer’s “Gospel According to the Son,” a fictive memoir by Jesus and an agent’s pitch passing for a novel. Crumb’s book is serious and, for Crumb, restrained. He resists the temptation to go all-out Crumb on us and exaggerate the sordidness, the primitivism and the outright strangeness (by contemporary standards) of parts of the text.
What is Genesis about, after all, but resisting temptation? Crumb luxuriates in the carnality of Genesis without playing it for gratuitous shock or comic effect. Adam and Eve frolic about in the nude, naturally, but in playful, duly innocent, ecstasy. When Lot’s two daughters get him drunk and have sex with him — in duty to the system of primogeniture that dominates Genesis the images are shocking, yes, but not gratuitously so; the shock is in the act,Tiffany Earrings, not in the portrayal. At points, Crumb withholds exactly the kind of graphic details he built a career on revealing: In an image of circumcision, he shows us two splatters of blood, rather than the actual penis being cut. Onan practices coitus interruptus turned away from us.
This book, I believe, is the first thing by Crumb ever published without a single image of flying sperm or a sharp blade approaching male genitalia.

Decision on Afghan Troops May Wait
Posted on October 27th, 2009 No commentsWASHINGTON The White House signaled Sunday that President Obama would postpone any decision on sending more troops to Afghanistan until the disputed election there had been settled and resulted in a government that could work with the United States.
As an audit of Afghanistans Aug. 20 election ground toward a conclusion, American officials pressed President Hamid Karzai to accept a runoff vote or share power with his main rival, Abdullah Abdullah, a former foreign minister. Although Mr. Karzais support appeared likely to fall below 50 percent in the final count, together he and Mr. Abdullah received 70 percent, in theory enough to forge a unity government with national credibility.
The question at the heart of the matter, said President Obamas chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, is not how many troops you send, but do you have a credible Afghan partner for this process that can provide the security and the type of services that the Afghan people need? He appeared on CNNs State of the Union and CBSs Face the Nation. He echoed the thoughts of Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, a top Obama ally and the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, who said in a separate interview from Kabul, I dont see how President Obama can make a decision about the committing of our additional forces, or even the further fulfillment of our mission thats here today, without an adequate government in place.
His interview was broadcast on Face the Nation. It would be irresponsible, Mr. Emanuel told CNN. Then he continued, paraphrasing the senator, that it would be reckless to decide on the troop level without first doing a thorough analysis of whether, in fact, theres an Afghan partner ready to fill that space that U.S. troops would create and become a true partner in governing. The signals come as Republican critics already are complaining that the president is taking too long to decide whether to send the additional 40,000 troops requested by his commander, Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal. They argue that Mr. Obama has left the impression of indecisiveness that has only emboldened the Taliban, making the task of the 68,000 American troops already there that much harder.
The delay, though, reflects deep uncertainty inside the White House about the prospects of waging a successful war without a partner in Kabul with widespread legitimacy among the Afghan people. A delay could also provide some political space at home for Mr. Obama, whose efforts to pass health care legislation are reaching a climactic moment in Congress, although the White House has denied any relationship between the two issues. The election in Afghanistan was so badly marred by allegations of fraud that they helped prompt Mr. Obama to rethink the strategy he unveiled just in March, officials have said. Mr. Obama and Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., among others at the White House, had already soured on Mr. Karzai, whose government and family are accused of corruption and ties to drug dealing. The election reinforced those doubts, officials said.Mr. Emanuels comments amounted to a clear signal to Mr. Karzai to press for a quick and broadly acceptable solution to the political crisis roiling Afghanistan.
Whether thats through a runoff or whether thats through negotiations, the process will be determined by the Afghan people, Mr. Emanuel said. He offered no timetable for a troop decision but noted that further review sessions were set for this week and next.Mr. Kerry met with Mr. Karzai in Kabul on Sunday night, the third time in three days, said an American official in Kabul, and he reiterated the American demand that the election process not be violated.Mr. Karzai has balked at accepting the impending audit findings that show he received less than 50 percent of the vote, an outcome that would trigger a runoff in two weeks.
Interrupting that process would pitch the country into a constitutional crisis at a highly sensitive moment.A Republican who appeared on the same program as Mr. Kerry, Senator John Cornyn of Texas, said the administration risked looking indecisive on Afghanistan, which then becomes a way of emboldening our enemies. Afghan governmental legitimacy is important but it shouldnt be the linchpin for us deciding whether were going to protect our national security interests, cheap tiffany pendant, he said.Westerners and Afghans familiar with the process said Mr. Karzai called a meeting late Saturday night over the results of the audit.
He expressed concern over the fairness of the audit to a broad cast of characters, including the United Nations and the United States, according to Afghan and Western officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to talk publicly.A spokesman for Mr. Karzai, Wahid Omar, denied that Mr. Karzai was contesting the pending results. But Western officials have given accounts that show otherwise. For the moment we are worried, the French foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, said in Kabul, according to The Associated Press. Because it seems that not everybody is ready to accept the results.Peter Baker reported from Washington, and Sabrina Tavernise from Kabul, Afghanistan.
